Reference electrodes & porous glass frits

In electrochemistry, the most basic equipment to be able to perform your experiment is a reference electrode. A reference electrode has a fixed electrochemical potential and is used to apply a potential difference to the electrode. Depending on your electrolyte and your system, you might want to prefer using chloride-based reference electrodes (Calomel, Ag/AgCl) or sulfate-based electrodes (Hg/HgSO4). Additionally, we also offer mercury-free electrodes that follow RoHS directive and are using the Red Rod technology based on NO3 compound. The size of the cell will also influence your choice of electrode. We offer both small cell and large cell reference electrodes. Various types of porous junctions are offered depending on the type of electrode that you are interested in. Advices for maintenance are also given.

Small reference electrodes for non-aqueous media (Ag/Ag+)

To avoid electrolyte leakage or concentration due to evaporation during storage or transport, the electrolyte is separated from the body. This gives the possibility to fill it regularly.

Maintenance of small reference electrodes

Firstly, when it is not in use, the recommended way to maintain the reference electrode capability and lifetime, is to keep it in a sealed preservative vial with a solution. This storage solution should be identical to the filling solution of the reference electrode.

SecondIy, it is also important to replace the porous glass frit when needed. A Yellowish discoloration can indicate contamination, caused by the adsorption of organic compounds into their pores.

Thirdly, to prevent the contamination of the electrode itself, it is recommended to use a new sample holder when necessary.
